What is Vitamin C derivatives?

Vitamin C derivatives are a group rather than one standardized ingredient. Individual derivatives differ in structure, stability, delivery and supporting evidence. Some may improve formula stability or skin feel, but none should automatically inherit the evidence, percentage or routine for L-Ascorbic Acid.

Suggested use

Find the exact derivative in the full INCI and follow the finished product directions. A serum usually sits after cleansing and before moisturizer, while a cream belongs later in the routine. Start once daily or every other day. Treat a change to another derivative or formula as a new product, and keep broad-spectrum sunscreen in the daytime routine.

What matters in the finished formula?

  • Ascorbyl Glucoside, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate and 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid are different materials, not interchangeable aliases.
  • A derivative may be easier to formulate near neutral pH, but that does not guarantee zero irritation or equal delivery.
  • Concentration, solvent, packaging, light and heat exposure, antioxidant system and the rest of the formula all affect product performance.
  • Stabilized vitamin C is a marketing description and does not identify an exact derivative.
  • Evidence for one derivative or finished formula cannot be applied to the whole category.

What can you observe?
