How to use this routine

The first week is for observing the finished Retinol product, not for chasing visible results. Use the labelled amount on one evening, keep other nights simple and watch for delayed dryness over the following days.

Why this structure?

Retinol irritation may appear after the application night. A full week between the first uses leaves enough time to see redness, flaking or tightness before deciding whether the product is currently tolerable.

Who may find this useful?

  • First-time users of a non-prescription Retinol product
  • People restarting after a long break
  • People changing Retinol concentration or delivery system

Weekly schedule

Day 1
Apply Retinol once to dry skin as directed.
Days 2 and 3
Use only cleanser and moisturizer at night.
Days 4 and 5
Continue the basic routine and record delayed dryness.
Days 6 and 7
Do not repeat Retinol yet; review the full week first.

How to track reactions

  • Record the exact product, amount, application area and next-day response.
  • Check the corners of the nose, eyes and mouth for localized over-application.
  • Do not label itching, swelling or an expanding rash as purging.
  • Keep exfoliating acids and another vitamin A product out of the week.

Main precautions

  • Do not use Retinol, Retinal and another retinoid together.
  • Do not increase frequency because there was no immediate sensation.
  • Use broad-spectrum sunscreen consistently in the daytime.
  • Ask a qualified professional before use during pregnancy or while trying to conceive.
  • Stop for persistent burning, swelling, cracking, weeping or widespread peeling.

How to adjust

  • Apply moisturizer before or after Retinol if that improves comfort without changing the labelled amount.
  • Extend the gap beyond one week if dryness has not returned to baseline.
  • Avoid highly sensitive facial areas rather than applying extra product there.
  • Restart at one night weekly after any product or concentration change.

Next step

What changes after four weeks?

After four stable once-weekly uses, consider a second non-consecutive night. Keep that schedule for another two to four weeks before any further change. A comfortable low frequency is a valid long-term choice.
